Hertiage Trail Plaque locations. The dataset contains locations and attributes of Heritage Trail Plaques, created as part of the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) for the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and participating D.C. government agencies.
All DC GIS data is stored and exported in Maryland State Plane coordinates NAD 83 meters.
METADATA CONTENT IS IN PROCESS OF VALIDATION AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
Purpose:
This data is used for the planning and management of Washington, D.C. by local government agencies.

Plaques were generally located using Trimble GPS units next to the front of the Plaque (within a foot). In some cases, they were located in the street ROW to acquire 3 satellites (up to 15 feet off).

Staff established a set up file for the Trimble's GeoXT GeoExplorer 2008 Series GPS unit prior to data collection. This file was populated in the field based on a heritage trail data dictionary created by DCGIS. The Trimble data was then transferred to a personal geodatabase created for daily data cleanup and preparation.
Staff and summer youth then went into the field and collected Heritage Trail plaque locations. After each trail collection, the data was transferred to the personal geodatabase. Staff and summer youth reviewed, qc'd, and prepared the data for final publication.
