FEMS Engine Local Alarm Districts locations. The dataset contains locations and attributes of Engine Local Alarm Districts, created as part of the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) for the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and participating D.C. government agencies.
Written documentation provided by FEMS identified Engine Local Alarm Districts locations. The dataset was created using the Street Center Line dataset as reference and snap base.
All DC GIS data is stored and exported in Maryland State Plane coordinates NAD 83 meters.
METADATA CONTENT IS IN PROCESS OF VALIDATION AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Engine Local Alarm Districts were checked for proper connectivity between bordering districts. Engine Local Alarm Districts were also checked to ensure snapping to Street Center Lines. In cases of "imaginary lines," alarm districts could not always be snapped to Street Center Lines.

Engine Local Alarm Districts were digitized manually snapping to the DC Street Center Line Dataset.
Documentation was provided by FEMS describing the boundaries for each Engine Company. The process involved reading written boundaries and tracing the street center line from start to finish, thus creating a new polygon record for each Engine Company.
Some descriptions are clear, while others are open to differing interpretation. For this reason, FEMS officials were consulted with to ensure proper coverage in areas where the descriptions are obscure. Maps showing first round digitization were delivered to each Engine Captain for an opportunity to dispute or confirm interpreted boundaries. Some areas of the city were not covered by any Engine Company according to written descriptions. These areas were brought to the attention of FEMS officials.
Once all Maps were returned, hand written comments and boundaries from the Captains and the Deputy fire Chief, were compared to one another. Adjustments were made to the second round of digitization resulting in a more accurate account of Local Alarm Districts.
