Abstract:
District of Columbia boundary. The dataset is a polygon representing the District of Columbia boundary, created as part of the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) for the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and participating D.C. government agencies.
The boundary was identified from public records and heads-up digitized using a combination of the 1995 orthophotographs, planimetric roads features, and the USGS digital raster graphic quad sheets, and 1999 planimetrics for the Potomac River boundary.
All DC GIS data is stored and exported in Maryland State Plane coordinates NAD 83 meters.

Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

The boundary was identified from public records and heads-up digitized using a combination of the 1995 orthophotographs, planimetric roads features, and the USGS digital raster graphic quad sheets, and 1999 planimetrics for the Potomac River boundary. The DC boundary is defined by cornerstones and the far Potomac riverbank. It has not been resurveyed since 1965. The three corners were located on the USGS quads, and lines drawn to connect them. Those lines were intersected with the riverbank edge form the planimetric water feature. The resulting line coverage was then built as a polygon. A base ArcInfo coverage of correct line work (snapbase.e00) for all DC data was developed after the final delivery of the planimetric street centerlines. The datasets were selected from the snapbase coverage, creating coincident geography with the other DC GIS datasets. When imported into the DC GIS geodatabase the coverages shift 0.01mm since the geodatabase supports only 11 digits of precision, not double precision (16 digits). The DC Boundary was part of this base dataset. Planimetrics were created at a scale of 1:1,000. This means that a well defined feature falls within two feet of true position. All DC GIS data is stored and exported in Maryland State Plane coordinates NAD 83 meters.
